Is there a solution address that provides functionality for Microsoft SharePoint that stack overflows like functionality?

I will advise not to use SharePoint for such a feature What SharePoint does (document) Management, collaboration, etc.), but everything else is terrible at all.

Are you compelled to develop for SharePoint, or can you just do it in ASP.NET / C?
